The device you want is called a Hall effect sensor. I know that you can get
them from Mouser or Digikey- Radio Shack might also have them. They are
pretty cheap, if memory serves.

Comments
are available from ( Jameco. #169691).
The latching ones have no bounce but do need a reverse polarity , that is a N
and sth pole at each location.
It's worth the effort to sue them as they much more relaible than reed switches
and do not break.

easier to use for quick pulses they have a fairly high freq. response (how many
times they
can sense in given period)
