hello,
i will build my first multicopter and plan to use arducopter.
can you advise a simple and reasonably priced rc transmitter that would be compatible? i will just build something very simple just to build something this is all. i need nothing fancy

    What model of flight controller are going to use. There are several models.

    Any receiver that outputs SBus is a good choice.

    You can also use either of the radios sold by Parallax such as this one: https://www.parallax.com/product/80208

    This unit has limited range of about 500 meters and there is no channel mapping to change the switch functions and will make changing flight modes a little difficult but usable.

    You can get a Flysky 6 channel for just over $40 if you need to go inexpensive. I think Turnigy is about the same level. I'm looking at something programmable with Open TX firmware for the long run myself, http://www.open-tx.org/radios , but that might be a little much for the project you describe. Frsky, Futaba, Hi-tec and of course Spektrum all make good models if you can get a deal on any if them.
    Definitely go with 2.8GHz if buying new, but the older Futaba 6+ CH FM (72MHz) are actually nice rigs to fly with if you happen to walk into a used complete set for next to nothing.

    If you're going with RX4 stuff instead of the Parallax Elev-8 flight controller, I would take a hard look at a Pixhawk or Pixhawk mini for the latest firmware capabilities. Arguably the most robust flight controller on the market. I might build one up to test against the Elev-8 V3 at some point.

    I use a Turnigy 9XR Pro with X8R receiver and XJT transmitter with my PixRacer and PixHawk Ardupilots.

    Works great.

    I recommend against using any transmitter where you install AA style batteries. That's really sketchy for something somewhat safety critical.

    Using that as my criteria, I found the best price for a basic transmitter system at Tower Hobbies.
