Parallax History PIC Application Notes 1-15 Pre 1999

ftp://ftp.ltu.se/pub/misc/microchip/doc/picapps.pdf

This is very interesting.

Why?

For one thing it has a couple of the elements to build the Basic Stamp 1.

It shows what is behind the Stamp.

16C54 = Basic Stamp 1

What was a Parallax Downloader?

Check out the writing style. Way better than Microchip documentation.

Anybody know who wrote this?

  • This is what led to that.

'Parallax - Used to sell PIC and programmers, now using Scenix.

Manufacturers of PIC programmers and the PIC-based BASIC Stamps. Useful information available here or via FTP. The PIC applications handbook is essential reading even though the examples don't use Microchip mnemonics (Parallax had a utility called swapcode that did a fair job of translation between MPASM compatible assembly language and their 8051-like dialect). '

    PIC Application Handbook.

Anybody know if that was a Parallax publication?

I don't really know for sure the title of the book or article above.

Sure looks likes like Parallax writing.
  • Obviously our hosts?

Ken wanna comment before I find myself needing to do something inappropriate?

  • Anybody know if that was a Parallax publication?

Sure looks likes like Parallax writing.

It does say "Parallax, Inc." on the bottom of every page.

  • Thank you Publison

Had that feeling I was out on a limb. For no reason.

    What was a Parallax Downloader?

Anybody know what the PIC Application Handbook was?

Do know hardware wise there was a Parallax PGM Programmer.

Looks like competitor to Picstart Plus.

    For 16Cxx PIC's.

Appendix H, pp 317-409, version 4.1 of the dev tools manual.
    360 x 385 - 86K
  • Also, from the 1994 Parallax catalog...
    553 x 720 - 164K

  • Thank you Tracy

Byte craft has a C compiler called MPC.

Could be the old Parallax one. Same name.

Take a look at link. Upper right hand corner.

That's a blurb for Bytecraft SXC compiler.

Compiler for SX chips. If you know how to talk to them you can get a copy.

If they were into SX's this could be the old Parallax C compiler.

Tech Tools definitely has Clearview emulator.

That download will run on current Window. Parallax Assembler compiler will not.

Blast from the past! My earliest archives are from 2004.

    Thanks for that.

Don't mind me Publison. I see your remark is intended for Tracy.

Let me just say this is tough sledding finding this stuff.

I think because it is Pre Internet.

You Google a major Parallax PIC product and get one mention of it if your lucky.

Think they cleared it off their own Parallax archives.Probably a wise move.

I rely on the "Way Back Machine" a lot, but I didn't have the time to research this one.

    Thanks for the links!

  • There are other ways of finding pre-internet details... Hunt through old magazines that have been digitized.

"wait til you read about this fabulous new toy!"
Check out the Basic Stamp article in the July 1996 issue of 73 Magazine on page 28

  • Thank you Zappman Publison and WBA

'There's more than one way to make a peanut butter sandwich.'

Guess I could get a Picstart Plus and a UV light box and use the

    Parallax lessons for 16Cxx PIC's.

    Seems so drastic though.

Have 16F54 57 and 59. Could probably convert the code.

Other option is use SX. Read that tidbit about SX being clone of PIC in some way.

How do you get Parallax documentation with a PIC?

    That is the dilemna.
  • @microcontrolleruser .... In your original post, I have that in the original spiral bound, <-- no less, paper back that Parallax used to distribute.

  • Mr Schwabe

Well. Actually the wife has clamped down on the microcontroller spending.

Also. Any other kind of spending.

So here I sit going 'Ooh! That's nice!'
  • So far, my electronics hobby pays for itself including the website +two domains .... what I sell on eBay goes to PayPal which is my "play money" ... My wife won't (or better yet) I won't dip into our main bank account.

  • Mr Scwabe

It's probably for the better in my situation.

Tutorial I am doing is not too bad of a writing style.

Just not that 'steady pace' of Parallax.

Sort of 'laid back Californian meets Tech' style. Although they are from Northern California not Southern.

The den is already kind of crowded. Have to be a little more discriminating about future purchases.

Small and relevant to what I'm doing. Clamp down on the 'historic' buying.

That Parallax PIC manual you have is a nice piece!
