So it should be a simple matter for you to build your creation and post the first video...? :)

No problem, just felt I needed to harass you a bit... As for making one, you don't know how bad I wanted to make it Monday night. For some reason the idea really sparked in my head. Unfortunately, work is in survival mode right now (insanely busy) and my free time is being spent on finalizing the datacomm infrastructure for the new office building at my church. Installed all the gear into the rack to get the full network live last night (hub, power strip, POE injector, Ubiquiti access point, and cables). Tonight I am hoping to clean up the mess that Comcast made with the punchdown block to reroute the VOIP lines and phone system extensions over to the new building. Comcast didn't use any standard method on the block/cables and marked nothing.

VOIP, Schmoip. They'll understand. This is SCIENCE, dangit!

I want to bang one out just to get the ball rolling. Either your wiggle walk idea or a two-legged tail dragger. Eventually both.

Where's my love Erco?? I posted the exact same idea 2 days ago in post #4.. now, where's that crying emoticon.............

Sorry Andrew, didn't mean to steal your idea. I did read your post, and it sounded like a pretty complicated mechanism that was intended for a walker. Have to admit that your description of the servo motor action was the inspiration for my suggestion, but my aim was for the simplest possible mechanism that did the job.

Actually I think Phil was the first to mention the ratcheting wheel idea in post #6.

kwinn, no problem, I don't think you stole my idea, I was just giving Erco a bad time because he skipped right over my post with his replies. Besides, I can't claim the idea anyhow since like my post says, I don't have the mechanical knowledge to explain my idea properly.

Erco, yes, please make one if you can. Would love to see one in action.

All I did so far today was this one servo robo-flower. Had to do something with the girls today! That's a dollar servo driving a dollar veggie steamer. Are batteries and servo testers down to a buck yet? :)

If the sides of the flower opened opposite of each other (one side open - one side closed or if the open part rotated around the flower) and the steamer was placed upside down on a flat surface - would it crawl? Can the steamer open like that. Just for fun turn it over and see what it does just as is! Strong enough?

Cool idea, Whitman! I love the way you think.

This particular dollar store steamer wouldn't last like that. The aluminum is very thin and the hinges are just part of the stamped aluminum. Any load like crawling would bend or break them. It's barely up to this flower app!

So when you build yours, start with a quality steamer, Pal!

I have something on the bench now which looks promising, a passive-legged mashup up of ideas discussed thus far. Should be working by tomorrow, just in case someone is racing me to be first. Working tomorrow doesn't mean finished and figure 8 ready, necessarily. :)

I'm having lunch next Wednesday with my hero Sir Gordon McComb. In my dream scenario, my bot will figure 8 effortlessly around 2 plates of tasty Peruvian chicken.

Couldn't wait, I slapped a servo tester on just to see the "Turtle" make its first steps today. It's a mashup of the alternating ratchet wheels mentioned by several and the ramp walker Rich mentioned. Very slow movement here will improve when I add a real control circuit. It will be able to turn left & right in addition to the more or less straight shuffle shown here. Plenty of sensor possibilities, too.

Fantastic work erco! I love the way the turtle moves.

I am with Publison - give Gordon a shout out from all of us.

He'll get a shoutout AND a Parallax hat! Then I'll only have one left for the next forumista to visit me. :)

A faster and more maneuverable turtle.

The turtle can run circles around this poor fellow (see video): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Robot-Dog-Kit-Toy-Car-Educational-DIY-Car-Hobby-Robot-Puzzle-IQ-Gadget-/391009088419

    Very nice job!
Looks like 1 servo, 1 IC, 1 Cap, 1 battery, 1 speaker and the mechanical parts???

Thanks for the kind words, lads. Especially high praise from Gordon! This one might become a kit before long as I'm getting into the robot camp/birthday party business. It's perfect for 3D printing and customizing.

    @Rick: Yes, it's an 08M2.

@zappman: One 08M2, one servo, two caps, two resistors, one switch, 1/8" programming jack, beeper & mosfet (underneath), and am IR sensor. I still have 2 unused GPIOs which may become a light tracker (2 photocells/phototransistors).

Or twin flamethrowers. Don't tease the Turtle!

You mean kids in the LA area will soon be able to choose between a pony, Zippy the clown or Uncle Erco's Flameboyant Robots???

I want Uncle Erco at *MY* next party!!!!!

From "related posts" I am reminded that OBC posed this challenge long before I did. Just as Curious One does, I've been out-erco-ed again!

Don't let me have all the fun, fellas! I'm starting on single servo bot #2 already...

I just ordered ten more 9g servos for $19: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141201759695

Come on in, the water's fine!

Neat. I like the minimal use of parts. I'd never be able to pull that off.

This Kickstarter video has a pretty good single servo robot, watch at about the 30 second mark.
