OT: Looking for Small Linier Actuators, for stamp project

I am looking for 3 to 6 inch throw Linier actuators. I used to buy them from a
company called ORA but the havn't sold them in years. These are not high
precision are more plastic than metal. Run off 6 or 12 VDC. is early 90s cost
about $12.00 each

Any help would be great.

Tom

    Tom,

I need something similar. Please let me know if you turn something up.

No and if my ruler serves me correctly the throw on a Cd player is about
1.5" inches. This unit looks like the arm to move a satellite dish. but is
    much smaller.

    Thanks for the try...

you can make a linear actuator very easily by using a piece of 'all thread',
a matching nut, and a dc motor. Attach the all thread to the motor shaft,
attach what you want to move to the nut, and rotate the motor one way to
move out and the other to move back.

Jim you make it sound so simple but you leave a bunch out.
First how do you determin the position. The unit I am speaking of has a
gearset to control the position of a potentiometer.
Speaking of gears. Typical units are gear reduced to increase torque..

Tom, Of course this type of actuator can not give you fine positioning but
instead lends itself to linear movement to fixed positions. Just put a
flag on the mechanism that interrupts an optical sensor(s) and you will know
when you are at that position(s). Small dc gearmotors are available for
good prices from James Electronics http://www.jameco.com or DigiKey
http://www.digikey.com . There is an inherent gear reduction in the screw
mechanism itself as well. If you want finer positioning, you can couple the
motor shaft to an encoder and read out position or to a slide potentiometer
(such as used on audio mixer boards). For some low cost linear
positioners, raid the local junk yard. Most cars with adjustable seats have
a couple and you may be able to get them for a couple of dollars each. Most
of these don't have any position feedback but you could add that in the
above detailed ways. Many have limit switches attached or built in. Also,
consider using a toothed belt and pulleys or sprocket and chain driven by a
dc gearmotor. The straight stretch of belt or chain moves in a linear
manner (each side in opposite directions simultaneously) and something
attached to it will also, and the teeth or links can be counted to determine
position. I design custom industrial controls and electro mechanical
devices so always consider different approaches to these kinds of things.
I'm from the old school of hotrodding so I was around when you had to design
and build everything, not buy it off a shelf somewhere, so I tend to 'think
    out of the box'.

    have fun,
    jim
