Problem with Stamp v1.091.exe

I am new to the Basic Stamp (I have the BS2 BOE), and I am
experiencing problems with the windows version of the programming
software. I have gotten programs to run fine with the DOS version,
but when I try to run a program from windows, I get the following
error: "Could not open port: Reason is unknown." Has anyone gotten
this error? If I try changing the default COM port preferences to
AUTO, I get a different error: "BASIC Stamp II not found on any COM
port. 1) Check serial connection. 2) Verify loopback connection
between RTS and DSR."

Again, it works in DOS, so I am a bit confused. Any suggestions?

My guess is that you have a mouse or other serial device connected to the
port in question and a Windows driver is holding it open. Also, keep in mind
that usually you can't use COM1 and COM3 at the same time, nor COM2 and
COM4. So if you have a mouse on COM1, COM3 is effectively useless.

Hi, you might want to re-boot your computer and go into the bios (press del
key or f1 at very beginning when told) and just make sure com 1 is set to
3f8 and com 2 is set to 2f8. Then if thats all set. when you go back into
windows go into the control panel and click on system icon, click the device
manager tab key and then scroll down to "PORTS (COM AND LPT)" and clcik on
the + to expand that. if there is no com2 then you need to go back to the
control panel and add hardware. and when it asks if you want windows to
search for hardware, say no and just select com port from the list of
devices. just go through that and it should work ok. make sure you do not
have a modem on com 2. you can check this by going back to the system icon
under device manager and checking out modem section. if you have a modem on
com2 you may want to use com 1 for your bs2 but if you have a mouse on com 1
then you might want to connsider getting a ps2 mouse or getting an db9 to
    ps2 adapter.

thats all i can think of..

Note: I have had problems with the windows version on my PII-400MHz DELL
    machine.
    Is yours a DELL ?

I never did resolve the problem and parallax could not help.

I had to revert back to an older, slower generic machine using the DOS
    version.

Let me know if you find anything.

    Thanks,
    Darren

I get this problem alot, actually. The problem is almost always one thing: A
conflict. I regularly forget to disable my Palm III's hotsync manager, which
is also on COM2. So they conflict and it doesn't work. If you are sharing
the com port with something else or there might be something else using that
port, try shutting it down. I did have a problem once where it was a
different problem, and I'm still not sure what the problem was. After a lot
of fiddling it eventually went away. I would say it is probrably a conflict
with another piece of software though. That would also explain why it worked
in DOS. (There wouldn't be anything else running.)
