What can I use to detect visible laser beams, the laser will be
pointed at the detector. I will only need to know when something
passes through the beam.

Mnay CdS cells will work with a visible light laser.

Thanks Bruce do you have any idea how the IR detectors know that 40khz
strobe light is on I would like to make one for visible light using
    lasers

There are a number of way to detect IR.

Radio Snack used to make a little credit sized card that would "glow"
if you hit it with IR light. It was some sort of IR sensitive spot on a
paper card - real simple. It was used to test if a TV remote was working or
    not.

Solid state CCD elements (which includes all forms of CCD cameras including
hand-held camcorders, and el cheapo bord cameras etc) are sensitive to IR.

If you are speaking SPECIFICALLY about the 40 KHz signal, and not just the IR
emanated, there are many Sharp units available both new and surpuls from
    which
you can build a little detector. At least once a week someone is asking
    about them
on one of the robotic lists. Everyone seems to have their favorits, but I'm
kind of partial to the Sharp unit. The only caveat is - I'd avoid some of
    the ones that
Radio Shack sells, on the mere basis that some are rather flakey.

Digi-key, most of the surplus catalogs, mouser, etc generally have them. So
    too
some of the vendors here on the Stamp list. I think Mark @ HVWTech.com has
had them. Others may as well too.

    Regards,

    Bruce

Theres a plan here for a laser based RS-232 transceiver system, should give
    you some ideas:

I checked out the link below for an rs232 optical transmitter and receiver ,
thanks for that its pretty neat. Does anyone know where there are plans for one
that would allow ntsc video and rs232?
