Issues programming SX28

Hi
Its been a few years since I have used the SX28, Im having a few issues programming the device. Im using an SX Key Rev F, old programmer. Have a USB Blitz but cant find a cable :{
When I try and read a device it comes up with comms errors, somtimes it makes through 50% somtimes 70% then just nothing "SX device not found".
I seem to remember this problem a few years ago on the 52 device. I dont have a clock source connected to the device.
any ideas.!
