These have been available for a while, but they are not the TSOP4038 that we wanted.

Reading back in the thread, these may not be compatible in some situations. Has anyone actually tried them?

I am certainly not an expert at reading datasheets but they looked pretty similar to me.

Good catch, Jim! I didn't see the TSSP vs TSOP at first glance. AFAIK they do look compatible from the data sheet, my main requirements being fixed gain and continuous signal compatible.

Funny, the price has about doubled. The last TSOP4038's I ordered from Mouser in Sept '12 was 66 cents each.

Keep in mind that the reason I recommend these is strictly for simple IR beacon/homing apps as demonstrated below. For IR control and receiving Sony TV codes, you can use nearly any cheap 38 kHz receiver module. Here are 10 units for 99 cents (auction, easy win, no bids): http://www.ebay.com/itm/10pcs-HS0038B-HS0038-SIP3-TO-92-IC-PCM-Infrared-Receiver-IR-Receiver-/251625835321?

I wasn't trying to fool you erco! Posts 23 and 25 discuss the TSSP being a replacement for the TSOP

    Jim -

Well, I got my TSSP4308 sensors from DigiKey today and tested one with code I use in my VMusic2 MP3 Player (which uses a Sony CD player remote with 37 keys) and it works perfectly.

I don't have anything to test continuous 38 kHz signals like erco uses in his beacon navigation robot but the spec sheet says it handles continuous signals.

    - Ron

My cherished supply of obsolete TSOP4038's is nearly gone, so I ordered (25) TSSP4038's from Mouser @ 68 cents each, but they are on backorder thru Dec 17, FYI. Will advise continuous signal compatability then, Merry Christmas.

You can still get the TSOP4038 version here http://www.taydaelectronics.com/ir-receiver-module-38-khz-tsop4838.html for $.66

    WRONG sensor!

Sorry, that's the 4838. Not continuous, I tested them.

Anybody need 10 for cheap? :)

No sir, I'm well stocked in units that are not continuous.

And many of those were dirt cheap, like 10 for 99 cents, free ship! http://www.ebay.com/itm/10pcs-HS0038.../251625835321?

Once again, the 4838 is fine for many applications like reading Sony TV remote control codes, or replacing BoeBot IR sensors. It just can't track a continuous (unmodulated) 38 kHz signal such as a simple LM555 emits.

Damn! Maybe you can cancel your order.

    Really sorry Jim!!

I had ordered some once not knowing they did not work in a continuous manner.

    Not to worry Ron,

They will be put to good use and I will have some left over to send for free for the school newbies on a budget.

I received my receivers (!) and tested them to confirm the TSSP4038 is continuous signal compatible, a worthy replacement for the discontinued TSOP4038. I had to accomplish SOMETHING during the Great Forums Blackout of Twenty and Fourteen.

Good to know. Get 'em while they are hot. Only 4,000 left!

If anyone knows of some students that need some 4838's, I have 10 I will ship for free.

These TSSP4038's MUST be hot items! Mouser and Digikey zero stock. Mouser to receive ~6,000 Feb 2nd. I can wait another month.

NOT continuous signal compatible, but perhaps the cheapest IR receivers you will find. If you need 120 for $10. At just 8.3 cents each, this hoarder's mouse finger is getting itchy!

I'm just curious, why are the majority of IR receivers not continuous?
  • ercoerco Posts: 20,250
    edited 2015-01-20 19:56
Excellent question, piguy101! My hunch is that the range and sensitivity of the receivers can be higher if they are not continuous. Any Waitrony catalog has dozens of different sensors with different specs and features, some are more tolerant of sunlight, some are long range, some high gain, some variable gain, some are better at rejecting certain types of competing signals, some have metal cases. The 4038 sensors have fixed gain, which is unusual AFAIK.
