dont see where the bs2 acepts a strick analog input ie var voltage from 0-5
see pot or rctime does not seem to fit
second part
if the stamp goes to output on startup will that damange a external device

Does not seem to do what i want looking for something that will measure voltage (0-5) all the time
and return a number relating to this does not have to be acccurate

Perhaps there wasn't enough specific information there for you to grasp the concept easily. Here is an applications note provided by Dr. Tracy Allen which explains it a bit more clearly and thoroughly:

It's that RCTIME method, or hanging an ADC outboard of the Stamp for measuring the voltage. The Stamp has no analog inputs, by design.

PJ does have knowledge in the matter, he is·just consise in the answer, especially when it is a commonly asked question.
For future reference, do a search using http://search.parallax.com, had you typed RCTIME into the engine, you would have found Tracy's page in the first thread returned by the engine.
Also Tracy's website contains a wealth of information on many subjects concerning the Stamp, when you have the time, take a look at it, it will provide you lots of knowledge on aspects of the Stamp in more depth than the Docs.
