Heh, I used to live there part of last decade.
Wonder if my Jewel-Osco grocery card still works...

Hmm. Strong memories of football sized burritos and Italian beef.

Also, yes indeed there is a Fry's in Downer's Grove. On S Finley Road.
Wonder when that place showed up?

Oh the things I would have done differently had I known what I know now.
I hope to never be so cash-strapped as I was when I lived there for college.
Hope I can stomach driving past some of the horrible places I worked at...

A MicroCenter over on Ogden not too far from the Frys also.

I stayed in Lombard a couple of years ago. To recover from jetlag I walked around the neighborhood, the first set of shops I came to had a small supermarket, bakery, hairdressers, and... amusement arcade complete with mini roller coaster ("Safariland"). So, naturally I assumed all USA shopping strips probably had some kind of roller coaster beside the other essentials :)

The Frys was a good big one and there was a motel right across the road from it, on the other side of S Finley

There was a Weber Grill restaurant (further along the main road) that was mighty impressive with its 2m diameter webers. I guess this is some kind of chain? I was impressed nonetheless...

I would have brought my CNC wire bender to the expo show last year, but you informed me it was on a second level. Hopefully this year, perhaps you can locate a space on the first floor. Providing you have nice access, I will bring my Propeller based wire bender to demonstrate the speed, accuracy, and versatility of the Propeller chip. In which case, I would have no objection to Parallax taking photographs or making a video of the machine in action to promote their Propeller chip for commercial or industrial applications.

It is just a thought. You do not have to specifically cater to me, but it is a nice piece of equipment with a Propeller chip.

Bruce

EDIT: Additionally, this machine will require at least 15A @ 120V
EDIT: On second thought, before stating current requirements, I will test the current draw with ammeter, and state actual requirements.

@Bruce,

The expo is in a new location: Lombard, IL. I'll post all of the details soon, but because it is ground floor, we should have no problem getting anything you need to display in and setup.

Thanks for the response and heads up. Considering that I have until June 23rd, perhaps I can finish the automated packaging machine before the show, and then it will really be something to see.

If you're coming from the north down I-290/355 to what becomes Tollway 355, i thiiiink you can still avoid the last toll by getting off one exit early at Army Trail Road.

Then from Army Trail road you take either OLD 53 south (Rohlwing road) and enter the "secret entrance" past the plant nursery gardening store (Glenbard Gardens), or else from Army Trail Road take Swift Road south down past the forest preserve to North Avenue, go over the tollway, then turn right into the hotel.

By 53, I mean not the I-290 53 that you don't even want to be on, but old 53 that's a 2 lane highway.

Regardless, I expect to hear stories about how everyone took the wrong exit from wherever they were coming from and got lost and had to pay a toll to both get off and get back on again. It's a requirement when in the Chicago suburbs. ;)

I just registered. It looks like there was no place to enter a name. Does it pass on some information to you (Jeff) from Paypal?

Google maps says that it's a 1/2 hour closer to me this year. I don't know if the traffic is the same as it was to Ottawa, though. Being closer to Chicago proper means I may have to make a longer trip out of it and actually go into the city.

It looks like there's a Metra (train) station in Lombard. For people who are familiar with the area, is a combination of the Metra into Chicago and then buses to zoo, museum, etc. a good idea?

If nothing else, I guess that would let me ride in a train that I have a model of (Kato Metra, N scale).

Got my room reserved today. Be sure to mention UPEC to get the reduced rate of $79+tax/night.

I'll be getting there Thursday night and be doing some sight seeing Friday.

Is there going to be a group get together Friday night? Or maybe even a late meet & greet?

Generally unless you want to spend a whole day downtown and are really good with time, it's a bad idea.
On the weekend, the train itself departs every 2 hours from a given station.
I have seen websites where you can call ahead and set up guided tours with a group.
This is generally the way to go if you want to use mass transit exclusively.

Otherwise with yourself and a buddy, yes you can get off at the end of the line in Chicago (Ogilvie) on Madison Street. You can basically walk to the art museum and willis tower and millenium park and grant park and stuff like that if you stay between Madison Street and Jackson Blvd. Just go during the morning and afternoon, not because of crime, but because it gets really, really boring after sunset. Stuff closes early. This isn't new york city.

That being said I've successfully driven with a group of people to the parking garage underneath grant park during taste of chicago on the weekend without a lot of pain. What I'm saying is that unfortunately it's still a very car-oriented city.

I see some unanswered questions in this thread about registration. How do you sign up more than one person?

I see no way to enter a name anywhere, what am I missing?
It could be that I'm just slow, but I may need a push (or kick) in the right direction on this one.

Do all attendees end up with the same name on name tags? (that does not seem likely).

Attending but not yet registered,
Roger

@Roger,

It's best to sign up each person separately. For some reason the Eventbright software doesn't hand multiple entries with their nametags well.

Good luck to the good folks handling "check ins". They are going to need it.

I'll bring the DS00 to show off, and answer questions about PropForth and GO Language CSP channels.

I'm not at all happy with the way Eventbright is handling the names for tagging purposes.

We may do something a bit different this year. It's been requested that we create a method for getting forum names on the badges as well.
I've got some ideas here that may make things better for both the registration people and the attendees.

I have a Zebra label printer, an old 105SL, it's built like a German tank and prints forever. There might be driver issue on the PC, though, I'll have to futz with it if you are interested. Oh and the 6x8 inch labels I have are REALLY sticky, they NEVER come off, so

The Art museum, Sears Tower, etc is the wrong part of the city to go to if you want to party all night. That part of the city is the financial district and for the most part shuts down when the exchanges do. For the night life you need to go to the north part of Downtown.

This hotel looks very close to the airport, if I'm seeing it right.
Was going to get a rental car, but a lady at the hotel told me that taxi is just ~$35 flat rate each way.
So, I think I'll do that, since it's cheaper and easier...
She told me I'm supposed to use "American Taxi" as they have some arrangement.
Not sure if that's real or not though.

BTW: Why isn't this thread in the Propeller forum? Seems like we should be chatting it up, if we want to get new people there...

Just to create some more activity on the thread, I guess:

My plans are to take the day off and drive up on Friday. Google maps says its a little under 6 hours (which is about the same as previous UPECs). That includes a pretty boring drive across Indiana, but I get to see a lot of wind turbines and my car gets to go past its birthplace.

Just sent you a message, but I'm also taking Friday off and making the 8.5 hour drive so should arrive early evening. If they don't have an "official room" I see that they have complementary breakfast buffet so they probably have a seating area for that.
