Where can I find a single LED that can reproduce all colors of the rainbow, or how to make one?

I am using one as a status indicator and by varying the PWM signal to each of the colors you can get a wide range of colors from it.

But that's actually 3 LEDs in one case.
Perhaps "we" are searching for an LED with a single polychromatic die.

SparkFun sells a few (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10820)different types and in various amounts.
Look for "RGB" on this page (http://www.sparkfun.com/categories/172).
If you're adventureous you can also find them on eBay.

I picked-up a pen with RGB LED that strobes through the colors of the rainbow at Frys in December. I think it only cost $1.99

Excellent sources - thanks! RGB - I have a red, green, and will look for a blue LED to make a rainbow generator..
