Nice read. And good on IEEE for capturing the blog and details before they became unavailable.
Lots of great take-aways about durability for robots in the field, and challenges working in human environments (doors, stairs, etc).

XLNT article. Interesting details on iRobot and the blog deletion. TEPCO should seize the opportunity to lead by sharing all pertinent info instead of staging a cover-up.

Radiation at Fukushima is still rising over a year later. Modern robots can't even function properly at the current radiation level. Sheesh...

Way back when I was a kid, I lived in Oceanside,Ca close to the San Onofre Nuclear power plant and they used to scare us about it in school with all the bad stuff that could happen if it were ever to have a problem.

Just for a good read

Here is a 1996 report on the Rad testing of the Cybermotion K3A mobile Robot.

It isn't cheap even by 1996 cost.

I feel kind of dumb but I thought the 'China syndrome' meant that the reactor would melt down into the earth's core...(and though to the other side!)
