View Full Version : $50 Toshiba HD Video Cam

08-18-2011, 03:45 PM

I just had to nab one. My twins are getting cuter every day, just too cute to capture on my old camera.

Reviews are all good, and they say it has excellent low-light sensitivity. I tried & returned another HD cam because it only took good video in bright sunlight.

Those girls really are getting cuter :-)

That looks like a good cam.
Remember those 808 cams?
They now have a 720p version that is 1280x720x30fps
and drops no frames! 39.00 on ebay from China.
Takes a mico-sd card in the side. It's only advantage
over this is its tiny size...same as the old 640x480
version2 cams like the one your old thread was about.
One nice thing is you can disable the yellow date-time
overlay in the lower right corner now.

Look at sample vids from the rc guys.

p.s Just got back from duty in the field a few hours ago...nice to be in
a cool place again :-) And looks like I'm just in time for the much anticipated
August/Sept war to start. Hamas just now announced the end of the unofficial
ceasefire. I'm carrying my Tar 21 with me everywhere but the shower..lol

Nice to hear you're OK, Holly! You must be pretty busy these days. Stay safe! :)

erco, look at this cam.

More feature rich and pretty good reviews.
Sample vids to be found on youtube.

You have to get the pink version to get the best price.
(must be an oversupply of pink models or an undersupply
of guys secure enough to use a pink camera)

Nice. That looks high quality...

Might you put that on a quadrocopter or something?

I always wanted a good, high quality HD 3-channel great optics huge zoom cam.. but I haven't bought any yet. I realize it'll be left behind too often. I recently went on a week's vacation and travelled lightweight, handluggage only. I made, as I usually do, some videos with one of the two phones I carry and with my still camera. And as always the result was pretty useless, not because of the video but because of the terrible sound. So now I just bought this one: Zoom HD Q3 (http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/q3hd/). It takes good videos, although there's no optical zoom (the 4x digital turns out to be more useful than I thought, unlike for still cameras). Sound is of course very good, that's its main focus, in a way. I already own a 4-track Zoom audio recorder with the same type of mics so I had a pretty good idea.
But best of all, its size and, not the least, shape, means it's always in a pocket in my vest (one of those with a great many inner pockets). Wish I had bought it before that vacation though.
It's slightly narrower/thinner than you would think just from the pictures.
It's much more expensive than e.g. the Toshiba, on the other hand you should be able to find it cheaper than the $299 from Amazon or Newegg, I got it from a shop in Norway cheaper than that if you ignore the VAT.

I was about to buy one of those Toshiba cameras the other day, but didn't. Now the price has gone up.

At that price, the pink Sanyo is a better deal.

Rick: Just 10 left in stock at Amazon. Better hurry, or you'll miss that boat too! :)

Have you received your camera yet? If so, are you satisfied with it?

I ordered the Toshiba CAMILEO S30 (http://us.toshiba.com/video-electronics/camcorders/camileo-s30) from BHPhoto. Spec Sheet (http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/product/pdf_files/detailed_specs/video-electronics/camileo_S30_spec.pdf)

It has a 8MP sensor and touchscreen display and comes with several cables.

Think it should arrive today.

I searched for Toshiba Camileo on YouTube and found lots of video tests including slow motion and time lapse.

I should get my S30 Monday - looking forward to exploring it's capabilities...

This one looked pretty darn good in fullscreen 1080p HD

Got it yesterday, wow. Grog LIKE. Very small, quite a different form factor from my traditional camera. Easy to use, nice sharp display, good low-light level recording. This $20 generic 16GB card arrived today and works great: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-16GB-SDHC-SD-Class-10-High-Speed-Memory-Card-/130555167444?pt=Digital_Camera_Memory_Cards&hash=item1e65b1c2d4

16GB shows 4:28 recording in FHD (1080p30), or 16:18 in 4:3 VGA. My first FHD tests look like ~1MB/sec of recording, which jibes with that 4:28 estimate.

Youtube, watch out!

I noticed that the S20 saves in AVI format while the S30 saves in MP4.

The S30 spec sheet lists the storage capacity per GB, so a 16 GB card should hold approx 160 min @ 1080p!

Approximate Video Recording Capacity - MPEG4 (1GB SD)
VGA (480/30fps) = 60 min
FHD (1080p) = 10 min
HD (720p/30fps) = 20 min

My S20's FHD output requires the h.264 codec, which may be MPEG4. The other 3 formats do not use that codec, so they may be AVI. I suspect I'll do most recording at 720p. That's plenty good for most home movies. Until the 50 TB hard drives start showing up... :)

My S20's FHD output requires the h.264 codec, which may be MPEG4.

Different codecs can be used in different containers (e.g. AVI,MPG,FLV,etc)

Here is a comparison of container file types and supported codec formats:

There is a handy program called GSPOT. You drag and drop a video onto it and shows the codecs and details
Here is an example of an AVI where the video codec is MP42

My buddy got one too, then complained that their ad said 5X optical zoom (I read elsewhere, where it said 5X digital zoom), and they him refunded $10. I'm happy with the deal I got, but if anybody else wants to try that tactic, you can lower your cam cost to $40...!

I got my S30 today. With a 16GB SD card, the display shows 3 hours and 47 minutes of record time in Full HD 1080P.

I'm pleased with it so far. Didn't really think about it but the sound is mono. Not a big deal - stereo mics on a device the size of a pack of cards wouldn't give much stereo separation anyway.

I actually haven't had much of an occassion to use it lately - I used my old Panasonic out of habit...
