The contest rules require a project report in MSWord. I certainly won't find that on *any* of my computers.
How about PDF? I mean the "P" in PDF stands for "portable".

Also, it is not very clear what will happen with the software and the schematics. Will you publish it, even with a (C)?

Nick,

You need to read the contest rules again regarding PDFs.

If you're using the vastly superior OpenOffice (you should at least have it for conversion purposes) then you should be able to export a Microsoft Word document.

Oh yes, I missed the point about PDF, sorry.

Nick Mueller,

As Phil pointed out, a PDF will also be acceptable if the original graphic files can be provided upon request so they may be posted on our web site.

But this brings up a point for other users that may not have the ability to create a PDF or MSWord file....
If you are using a Linux or Mac X environment, then OpenOffice (which is usually already installed) will allow you to do a "save as" to Microsoft Word in several different flavors.
Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) - would probably be most applicable.

I'm certain that we would be willing to work with you if this would be the only thing keeping someone from entering the contest.

I just checked my non-Windows systems (Mac OS/X and Ubuntu Linux). Both have a "save/print to PDF" facility built-in. It was nothing that I had to install on either one. On my Windows system, I use PrimoPDF (http://www.primopdf.com/), an excellent (and free!) Windows pdf driver (which, IIRC, Beau recommended once). So it would seem that all bases are covered pdf-wise, without requiring any extra expenditure. (Well, okay, if you're running CP/M, you may be out of luck.)

Are you sure you can't allow people under 18? I think I might have some ideas.

Ok, we can ammend the rules. The age eligibility rules are:

The Contest is open only to individuals who are 18 years or older.
Residents of the United States between the ages of 13 and 17 years old
are eligible to participate in the Contest but will be required to
submit a signed parental consent form in order to collect any prizes won.

So you have to be a US resident and·13 or older, if you still don't qualify you can have one of your parents enter the contest for you.

but why not.. I'm in.. :)

I wonder about that qualifier: "Or the equivalent in Parallax products." Regarding the prize money...

Someone might be dissappointed to get 100 Proto boards instead of $2000 !

Paul Baker

From the contest rules:

As an alternative to the cash prizes winners may choose to receive a commensurate value of any Parallax products.

Are we allowed to incorporate parts of someone's code into our project provided we give them credit and use it for this competition (e.g. a gps robot, in which case we modify someone's gps code, but the project itself is not just about the gps, or gps logging, etc; of course the project would not just be a conglomerate of various people's code; or things like objects would you be allowed to use those)?

Thanks,

I'm asking since I am relatively new to some of the things in the .spin language.

As long as you have the permission to incorporate the code (such as the code on obex) and maintain the the appropriate credit you are welcome to use other people's objects (with the obex, that's why they are there).

Well, I decided to sign up for the competition. This will be my first propeller as I was introduced to it for the first time a couple of days ago due to the ybox2 kit. I'm not expecting to win or anything, but I figured it could be fun and with the deadline it should push me to finish it.

My mistake, Deadline was October 21st, 2008 (12:00 AM PST) and to answer my own question; "Winners will be notified by email the week of November 17th, 2008. Projects will be posted on the Parallax website the week of November 24th, 2008".

I was told (and I'm hoping) that the deadlines are always at Midnight...

PS:· You guys were scaring me, so I called them up and the deadline is tonight at Midnight, so still a few hours left...

My thoughts exactly. I am really hoping there is going to be another such contest next year.
Good projects take time.

Has there been any further news or announcement on the Propeller Design Contest?

Edit: Oh OK, I just saw the page has been updated to say that due to the large number of entries, winners will be notified Dec. 1. Thanks.
